Agent signup: get a Mixpeek API key without a browser
An agent working for a person can create a Mixpeek account with one call to POST https://api.mixpeek.com/v1/signup/agent. The response has a working API key, a namespace with a bucket, a collection and a retriever, and the calls that take a file to a search result. The person whose email the agent sends gets one email, and the key keeps working only if they confirm it.
What the agent sends
curl -X POST https://api.mixpeek.com/v1/signup/agent \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"email": "[email protected]",
"agent_name": "Claude Code",
"accept_terms": true
}'email: the person the agent works for. They receive the confirmation email.agent_name(optional, up to 80 characters): shown to them in that email.accept_terms: must betrue. Use of the account is governed by the Mixpeek terms, and the agent accepts them for that person.
What comes back
api_key: send it asAuthorization: Bearer <api_key>. It is shown once; Mixpeek stores only its hash.namespace: send it as theX-Namespaceheader. It already holds a bucket, a collection and a retriever.bucketandretriever: where to upload files and what to search with.credits: 1,000 to start, enough to index and search a few dozen files.next_steps: the calls from upload to a search result, in order.key_expires_atandstatus: the key readspending_confirmationuntil the person confirms.
What the person has to do
The email has two links. Keep the key, and it stops expiring. Block it, and the key is revoked and agents can no longer sign up with that email. If they do neither, the key stops working 72 hours after signup.
Instructions for agents
- Ask the person before you sign up. Use their own email, and tell them the terms you are accepting for them.
- Tell them to expect an email from Mixpeek, and that the key expires in 72 hours unless they confirm it.
- Keep the API key private. Store it the way you store their other secrets, and never print it in a shared log.
- A 409 means this email already has a signup waiting for confirmation. Ask the person to confirm it. Do not sign up again with a different email.
- A 403 means the person blocked agent signups. Stop, and tell them.
- A 429 means too many signups from this address this hour (the limit is 5 per IP address). Wait, and do not retry in a loop.
- Never pay for anything. Moving past the starting credits means choosing a plan, which the person does in Studio. Plans start at $25 a month; see pricing.
After signup
Connect the same account to your tools with the MCP server: curl -fsSL https://mixpeek.com/install | sh sets it up for Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI and Cursor. The API reference has the full schema, and the MCP guide lists every tool.
