What is Media Asset Management (MAM)

Media Asset Management (MAM) - Software for storing, finding and reusing video and audio

Media asset management (MAM) is software that stores, organizes and retrieves video, audio and images through a production workflow: ingest, proxy generation, logging, review, editing and archive. A MAM such as iconik, Dalet or Avid MediaCentral is built around footage and editors, where a digital asset manager (DAM) is built around finished brand and marketing assets.

    How It Works

Files are ingested from cameras, uploads or cloud buckets. The MAM creates a lightweight proxy of each video for browsing and review, records technical and descriptive metadata, and links the asset to projects, collections and rights information. Editors find footage by searching that metadata, preview the proxy, and pull the full-resolution original into their editing software.

    MAM vs. DAM

Both store assets and their metadata. A MAM handles timecode, proxies, long-form video, editing-software panels and archive tiers, because its users are producers and editors. A DAM handles brand portals, approvals and distribution of finished images, documents and videos, because its users are marketers. Many teams run both, with finished work moving from the MAM to the DAM.

    Technical Details

Search in a MAM matches metadata: titles, custom fields, tags, and increasingly AI-generated transcripts and detected objects. Searching for a described moment inside the footage needs an index of the video itself, built from scene embeddings, speech transcripts and on-screen text, with each hit pointing to a timestamp in the source asset.

    Media Asset Management in Mixpeek

Mixpeek connects to a MAM's storage or API and builds that footage index. The iconik integration syncs an iconik library, reads each asset's proxy, and indexes scenes, faces, speech and on-screen text while keeping the iconik asset ID and metadata on every result. How to search inside videos in iconik compares this with iconik's own AI search.

    Best Practices

    • Agree a small set of required metadata fields at ingest, and let AI fill the descriptive ones
    • Index proxies for search and keep originals in their storage tier
    • Keep the MAM's asset ID on every search result so editors land on the right asset
    • Test search with moments your team already knows are in the library before trusting it

    Common Pitfalls

    • Relying on tags entered at upload, which are incomplete and go stale
    • Treating a transcript as full video search, which misses anything that is shown and never said
    • Indexing the whole archive before checking results on a sample collection
